Harry Potter Houses

This is only loosely related to literature, but I wanted to talk about Harry Potter I thought a fun subject to discuss would be the different hogwarts houses, and my opinion of each house. First, I would like to say that I am a Gryffindor, which I know, is surprising. So, my views of each house will be from the perspective of a Gryffindor.

Gryffindor -
The book’s protagonists come from this house, which means readers of Harry Potterknow more about this house than any other one. From all I’ve seen, I generally like Gryffindor house. I like the common room, the exciting antics the characters get into, and the loyal friendships. I know most people who don’t know much about the HP franchise just know that Gryffindors are the good guys, and I don’t think that’s necessarily wrong, but we do have some bad traits. Our bravery sometimes comes off as stupidity and recklessness. There have been times where Harry jumped into action without thinking and wound up endangering his friends. Jumping into action without common sense can often lead to a situation getting worse. Something I do appreciate about Gryffindors is that you just have to want to be brave to be a Gryffindor. You can be smart like Hermione, loyal like Ron, or even have a touch of the dark lord in you, like Harry, and you can still be Gryffindor.

Ravenclaw -
The house I thought I would be sorted into. The most common compliment I get is related to my intelligence, so I assumed I would be a Ravenclaw. I feel like HP readers rarely get a glimpse inside Ravenclaw or Hufflepuff common room, so I probably won’t have much to say about the two houses. I don’t have much to say, but I do admire Ravenclaw’s intellect, creativity, and willingness to think outside the box. Being sorted into Ravenclaw is like getting a compliment. I would say that Ravenclaw’s mind their business more than the other houses. They aren’t close to Gryffindors, Hufflepuffs, or Slytherins. However, if I had to compare them to another house, I would say they’re nice Slytherins.

Hufflepuff -
I think the most common view of wizards sorted into Hufflepuff is that they aren’t brave, smart, or ambitious, and that’s why they got sorted into Hufflepuff. Some Hufflepuffs may fall into this category, but many don’t. Hufflepuffs are hard working, kind, loyal, and humble. Cedric Diggory was a Hufflepuff, and he was the most well rounded 17 year-old wizard at Hogwarts (the goblet of fire picked him). I think Hufflepuffs are quietly brave, and that’s possibly why they get along quite well with Gryffindors. Hufflepuffs stood beside Gryffindors when fighting in the Battle of Hogwarts. Hopefully people stop feeling bad about being sorted into Hufflepuff, after all Hufflepuff has produced the least amount of dark wizards. Getting sorted in pretty much means you’re a good person.

Slytherin -
Slytherins are known to be the “bad guys” and the enemy of Gryffindors, so most casual HP observers don’t like them. Slytherins certainly have some bad traits, and even some that are exclusive to their house. Like, J.K Rowling said that not all Slytherins are extreme racists, but all extreme racists are slytherin. So I’m not going to deny the not-so-stellar parts of Slytherin, but I won’t ignore their positive traits either. Slytherins are ambitious, driven, and cunning. Many Slytherins become successful as adults because they have the drive to get what they want. Slytherins and Gryffindors are actually pretty similar when it comes to their passion. Slytherins are also similar to Ravenclaws because they both are clever. Something I admire about Slytherins is that they are resourceful, flexible, and (in most cases), capable of great change.

I hope my Gryffindor agenda wasn't too prevalent in this post. I’ll talk to you guys in two weeks.
